The rules for using Expense
Expense is a free expense tracker run by one person. Use it for your own receipts, keep them out of other people's accounts, and check what it fills in before you file: the reading is good, not infallible.

Expense is a free expense tracker for individual taxpayers, developed and operated by ZHED Media. It doesn't show ads and is free to use.
By creating an account you agree to those terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
Your account
Keep your password private. Everybody you invite with your account's invite code sees the same expenses, so please invite carefully, and know that you're responsible for what your account's members are doing.
Assistant you connect via MCP works within the permissions of your account: whatever it writes ends up in your expenses, and sees nothing else. You can revoke it in Settings whenever you wish.
Your data is yours
You own receipts, expenses, trips, and notes you enter into the app. You give the app permissions to store and process them to perform whatever task you requested: read a receipt, match a statement, answer Insights question, make a report or an export.
Where the data is stored, which cloud services it uses and what they have access to is detailed in the privacy policy.
What not to do
Don't upload receipts which are not yours, don't abuse the app for anything illegal, don't interact with accounts that are not yours, don't scrape or flood the service, and don't pretend it's your own.
An account exhibiting such behavior will likely get suspended, which nobody likes.
Not tax, legal, or accounting advice
App uses IRS mileage rates, Schedule C categories, adds up expenses and reads receipts. It is bookkeeping help, not advice, and the reading is far from being flawless: OCR and the model can misread a merchant, total and a date from time to time.
Always double check what it filled before you file, and consult a professional on actual tax questions.
Availability
App is provided as is, without any guarantee regarding uptime or availability. Features come and go, break and get fixed, sometimes even disappear, and limits applicable to free plan might change along with them.
Keep your own copies of any data that you can't afford to lose: ZIP export dumps all expenses and their receipts into one file.
Summary
You can delete your account in Settings any time you want: all data in it will get deleted, and the account itself – if there's no other account member anymore. If there are still other members left in the account, your login will be disabled and you'll have to disconnect any mailbox you've connected first.
I may suspend account which abuses the service or violates the terms above.
Liability
The app is free, so there is no real monetary consideration I owe you. In clear language: I am not responsible for any lost data, any data that has been read incorrectly, any missed deduction, or any indirect consequence of using the app.
Those terms are governed by California law in the US, where I live.
Updates
Whenever terms of use are updated, the date above changes, and you agree to the new version of them by continuing to use the app. If you have questions, contact me at assaf@labnotes.org.
